摘要
Purpose of review The purpose of this review is to provide an organized overview of the current literature regarding novel biological strategies for treating intervertebral disk degeneration. Recent findings The new biological treatments involve three basic approaches: protein therapy, gene therapy, and cell therapy. Recent studies have demonstrated the potential of each approach in modulating the biology of the intervertebral disk. Summary Although these studies have established the theoretical benefits of biological modulation, significant work remains to be accomplished before human clinical trials can be considered.
