RESPONSES OF BIOTRANSFORMATION ENZYMES IN FISH LIVER - EXPERIMENTS WITH PULPMILL EFFLUENTS AND THEIR COMPONENTS

Three feral fish species captured downstream to a Finnish pulp and paper mill using chlorine bleaching showed statistically significant increases in liver EROD (7-ethoxyresorufin deethylase) activity extending at least up to 13 km from the sewer compared to upstream situation. Rainbow trout and whitefish caged on the same lake area for 3 weeks showed similar patterns of induction. A simulated effluent as well as dehydroabietic acid and tetrachloroguaiacol displayed a very low capacity or were totally devoid of capacity to induce EROD in trout liver. © 1990.
