MOSSBAUER STUDY ON STRUCTURAL-CHANGES IN SPUTTERED FE-AL-SI THIN-FILMS

The sendust alloy films of Fe74.3Al9.8Si15.9 with a thickness of 1-mu-m were deposited on crystallized-glass substrates by rf planar magnetron sputtering, and the microscopic structural changes in the films due to the annealing were investigated with a conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy (CEMS). The films annealed at 500-degrees-C exhibited excellent soft magnetic properties as for recording-head materials. The CEMS studies revealed that the disordered structure of alpha-type in as-sputtered films transformed into the ordered structure of DO3-type at the temperature of 500-degrees-C. The structure of the films annealed at 400-degrees-C deviated largely from the DO3 ordered structure, and the DO3 ordered structure was gradually destroyed by annealing above 600-degrees-C. The magnetic and electrical properties in the films were well explained with the microscopic structural changes clarified through the Mossbauer spectra.
