X-RAY-DIFFRACTION STUDY ON PRESSURE-INDUCED SUCCESSIVE PHASE-TRANSITION IN SELENIUM

摘要
High-pressure x-ray diffraction study of hexagonal Se has revealed that it undergoes three phase transitions up to 54 GPa: to an intermediate phase (Se-II) at 14 GPa, to base-centered monoclinic(Se-III) at 23 GPa and to base-centered orthorhombic(Se-IV) at 28 GPa, in addition to the transition to a beta-Po type primitive rhombohedral lattice(Se-V) at 60 GPa reported recently. An analogy in the structural sequence of pressure-induced phase transitions was confirmed between VIb group elements, Se and Te. Strong anisotropy of the linear compressibility has proposed a layer structure for the monoclinic and the orthorhombic phases.
