ANODIC POLARIZATION OF GALENA IN RELATION TO FLOTATION

The anodic oxidation of galena (PbS) has been studied in slightly alkaline solution using potentiodynamic sweeps. The reaction order with respect to pH was found to be 0.5 in the pH interval 8-11. Both lead ions and xanthate ions in low concentrations were found to inhibit the oxidation of galena. At maximum inhibition the surface coverage of lead could be calculated to almost 1 and of xanthate to 0.5. Based on these experimental results the oxidation of galena at low overpotentials is proposed to proceed as a surface reaction, yielding PbOH surface complexes and an underlying metal deficient lead sulfide.
