An investigation of the synthesis by the flux method and the characterization of Y2O2S:Eu for cathode ray tube application is presented. In order to obtain an excellent europium distribution inside the matrix, an yttrium-europium coprecipitated oxide has been used as the raw material. The optimization of firing conditions has been studied. After firing a mixture of Y2O3, Eu2O3, and Na2CO3 + S (as a flux) at 1250-degrees-C for 2 h, Y2O2S:Eu was obtained without any Y2O3 as a second phase. The mean particle size is around 6-mu-m and the cathodoluminescent properties are equivalent to those of the best commercial yttrium oxysulfide.
