Transmission electron microscopy has been used to investigate the microstructures of the implanted layers formed on Ti-6Al-4V (where the alloy composition is given in approximate weight percent) and hard chromium plate by nitrogen implantation to a dose of 3. 5 multiplied by 10**2**1 ions m** minus **2. For Ti-6Al-4V the implanted layer was found to consist of a dispersion of fine TiN particles in a deformed matrix of alpha -Ti. The microstructural features observed are discussed in relation to wear behavior, both generally and specifically with respect to the two materials investigated.
