CORRELATION OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF ORGANIC SOLUTES BETWEEN WATER AND WET ORGANIC-SOLVENTS WITH THE PROPERTIES OF THE SOLUTES AND THE SOLVENTS

Distribution data of organic solutes (species 2) between water and water-saturated tri-n-butyl phosphate as well as six water-saturated alkanols (species 1) have been correlated with properties of the solutes and the solvents. The expression log K(W)O = A(V)'.V(x2) + A(beta)'.beta(m2) is statistically adequate, and only a small improvement is achieved if the term A(alpha)'.alpha(m2) is added. The coefficients A(V)', A(beta)' and A(alpha)' are then related to the relevant properties of the water-saturated solvents relative to water: DELTA-delta(H1)2, DELTA-alpha-1, and DELTA-beta-1, respectively. The coefficients for these 'wet' solvents as well as those for essentially 'dry' solvents are used to predict the distribution ratios of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids between solvents of these categories and water, in agreement with experimental results. The supposition that the 'wet' solvents are microheterogeneous to a large extent helps to explain the different coefficients with respect to hydrogen bonding that have to be used for them and for essentially 'dry' solvents.
