N-alkylated poly(4-vinylpyridine) can be a useful model to investigate the effects of hydrophobicity and flexibility of the alkyl groups on the binding of small molecules by macromolecules because of its N-alkylated pyridine. In previous papers, the effect of hydrophobicity on the binding of small molecules such as p-toluenesulfonate and aliphatic acids by vinylpyrrolidone-N-alkyl-4-vinylpyridine copolymers and that on the binding of methyl orange by N-alkylated poly(4-vinylpyridine)s3 were examined, respectively. In this paper, the extents of binding and then thermodynamic parameters for the binding of methyl orange by N-partially alkylated poly(4-vinylpyridine) are examined, and the dependence of these results on the degree of alkylation is discussed.
