DONOR PROPERTY OF REDUCED CERIA ELECTRONS - INFRARED STUDY OF TETRACYANOETHYLENE ADSORPTION

Tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) adsorption onto ceria was studied at room temperature by means of FTIR spectroscopy. On ceria calcinated at 723 K and evacuated at 823 K, the tricyanovinylalcoolate anion (TVA-) was the main species formed ; it was characterized by an intense v(CO) band at 1564 cm-1. The same species was observed on MgO and Al2O3 pretreated in a similar way. On ceria H-2-reduced and evacuated at 823 K, strong v(CN) bands were observed and assigned to TCNE(x-) (x = 1, 2, 3) anions in a multilayer adsorption state. By comparison, TCNE adsorption on H2-pretreated alumina mainly led to TVA- species whereas the TCNE2- dianion was hardly detected. It is therefore concluded that the formation of TCNE(x-) anions on reduced ceria is due to the reducible character of the oxide and to the electron donor power of Ce3+ ions.
