A HIGH BRIGHTNESS LITHIUM METAL-ION SOURCE FOR NUCLEAR MICROPROBE APPLICATIONS

Further development of a lithium liquid metal ion source for use in the terminal of a Van de Graaff accelerator is described. Test bench measurements of the resulting Li beam at 22 keV indicated a brightness of 5 x 10(4) A m-2rad-2V-1 on the beam axis, showing interesting potential for use in MeV microprobe applications. Uses of MeV Li beams produced with an early version of the source are described. They include microprobe scanning and high depth resolution RBS measurements.
