PREFERENTIAL SOLVATION OF IONS AND SOLVENT TRANSPORT

In the common binary aqueous mixtures, for example dioxan + water, an ion induces a non-random equilibrium distribution of solvent molecules such that close to the ion one solvent component is in excess of its concentration in the bulk. Thermodynamic, spectroscopic and transport properties of the solution are influenced by this preferential solvation. We concentrate here on the transport of one solvent component with respect to the other in the field of the ion and show how diffusion and transport measurements can be combined to obtain the transport number of water, say, with respect to the non-aqueous solvent component, nw. © 2013, Walter de Gruyter.
