In heteronuclear double resonance experiments the observing and irradiating radio frequencies are fed into the same nuclear magnetic resonance probe. In many cases a stable relationship between the two radio frequencies is essential. A system meeting this requirement is described whereby the observing frequency of a 100 MHz spectrometer is phase-locked to a harmonic of the 100 kHz reference of a frequency synthesizer, the synthesizer being the source of irradiation. The locking system has a hold-in range of 350 Hz.
