DISPLACEMENT STRUCTURES IN 2-DIMENSIONAL AND 3-DIMENSIONAL POROUS-MEDIA AT LOW VISCOSITY CONTRAST

We have studied the structures that arise when a low-viscosity fluid displaces a high-viscosity fluid in a transparent 3-dimensional porous medium. The viscosity ratio m is not far removed from one (m congruent-to 14) in this system. The fluids we use have equal densities so that there are no gravity effects. The injected fluid forms ramified structures. We have analyzed in detail experiments performed at a fixed, intermediate displacement rate (Ca congruent-to 10(-4) by measuring the projected area A of the growing structures. The cluster mass M is found to scale with a characteristic length R(A) obtained from this area, as M approximately R(A)D(A) with D(A) = 2.5 +/- 0.1. The experiments were compared to results from the numerical off-lattice "DLA" model. We find a reasonably good quantitative agreement in terms of the scaling exponent D(A), although the experiments are outside the DLA regime of viscous fingering. The qualitative effects of a low value of m (with m > 1) on displacement structures were explored through a series of experiments using a 2-dimensional porous medium. More compact structures tended to be formed for lower values of m.
