MODELING AND OPTIMIZATION OF TRAVELING-WAVE LINBO3 INTERFEROMETRIC MODULATORS

The characteristics of high-speed LiNbO3 electrooptic interferometric modulators-switches are discussed from the viewpoint of optimization of device performance. Specific calculations of the impedance, effective microwave index, and microwave attenuation parameter are presented as a function of the microwave electrode parameters including the buffer layer thickness. We have found that the optimization procedure is considerably simplified when we first determine the range of electrode and microwave parameters that will satisfy a given bandwidth requirement. The required microwave drive power is then minimized by varying the electrode parameters for optical modes that have the tightest confinement. We have calculated the drive power required for three cases; 1) CPW electrode on x-cut LiNbO3 2) CPW electrode on z-cut LiNbO3, and 3) ACPS electrode on z-cut LiNbO3. The drive power required for both CPW and ACPS electrode on z-cut LiNbO3 seems to be lower than CPW electrode on the x-cut crystal cases at both 10 and 20 GHz bandwidth. Our model predicts that 0.3 W of minimum microwave drive power is required for 20 GHz bandwidth, and 0.1 W is required for 10 GHz bandwidth at the 1.3-mu-m wavelength when the gold electrode is 3-mu-m thick.
