SOLID PARTICLE EROSION OF TITANIUM NITRIDE COATED HIGH-SPEED STEEL

摘要
The erosion characteristics of titanium nitride coated high speed steel have been studied using alumina particles as erodant. By varying the coating thickness (0.4, 1.3 and 3.0 μm) and substrate hardness (290, 565 and 1000 Hv, nine different composites were obtained and the relationship of coating erosion rate (e) to composite hardness (Hcomp) was determined as e∞Hcomp-b, where b is an experimental constant. The dominant coating failure mechanisms were identified as a combination of fatigue wear and cutting erosion or erosive fatigue wear and spalling, respectively. The coating failure mechanisms are compared to those obtained for scratch adhesion testing performed on identical specimens, and the potential of particle erosion as an adhesion test is discussed. © 1990.
