COMPOUNDS OF TITANIUM(3) CHLORIDE FROM NONAQUEOUS SOLVENTS

The magnetic susceptibility of solid Ti(CH3CN)3Cl3 was studied over the temperature range 88-300°K. The temperature dependence of the magnetic moments was found to fit Figgis’ theory when the parameters λ = 154 cm−1, Δ = 770 cm−1, and k = 0.7 were used. Out of an acetonitrile solution of titanium(III) chloride, compounds of composition Ti(nc)2Cl3, Ti(en)3 Cl3, and Ti(dien)2Cl3 were obtained. In acetic anhydride or acetic acid slow acetate substitution for chloride occurred. From acetic anhydride solutions compositions of Ti(Ac)Cl2 and Ti(Ac)2Cl were produced, but no trisubstituted product could be obtained. From a freshly prepared acetic acid solution and cesium chloride, Cs2TiCl5· CH3COOH precipitated.
