This report highlights some of the difficulties of attempting to associate drugs with adverse effects. A 23-year-old woman developed pancreatitis while receiving enalapril, 5 mg daily, for hypertension. An extensive literature review revealed only three reports (5 cases) of pancreatitis associated with enalapril. A search conducted under the Freedom of Information Act through the Food and Drug Administration uncovered only 3 additional cases. However, approximately 50 cases linking pancreatitis to enalaprii have been reported to the manufacturer through the spontaneous adverse drug reaction reporting program. Our case report strengthens the association between enalapril and pancreatitis and highlights the need for more timely and easily attainable information about adverse drug reactions.
