Poly(3-alkylthiophenes) prepared by chemical methods were compared in order to determine the regiospecificity of the method and the molecular weights of the resulting polymers. Polymers obtained via Grignard reagent (Ni catalyst) resulted to be almost free from head-to-head defects but of low molecular weight. Polymerisation of trimers of symmetric nature was attempted using FeCl3 in order to avoid the possibility of wrong linkages and to obtain polymers with alkyl chains suitably spaced.
