Hydrous oxide growth and reduction on Pt in aqueous HClO4 and NaOH solutions were investigated using potential cycling techniques. There was no dramatic difference as compared with the same type of reaction with Pt in aqueous H2SO4. The growth process, which may yield one or two hydrous oxide products, is quite complex and the observed trends are usually not easily explained. The investigation of the behaviour of Pt hydrous films in base is complicated by the inability to quantitatively reduce such deposits in solutions of high pH.
