KINETICS OF BOVINE SERUM-ALBUMIN IN FISH PLASMA AFTER HYPEROSMOTIC INFILTRATION TREATMENT - COMPARISON BETWEEN MARINE AND FRESH-WATER FISH

To clarify plasma BSA kinetics in marine fish after hyperosmotic infiltration (HI) treatment, seawater-acclimatized fish (yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata, tilapia, Oreochromis aureus, and chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta) and freshwater-acclimatized fish (rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, tilapia and chum salmon) were administered BSA by intravenous injection or HI treatment, and the plasma BSA level measured. Using a least squares technique, the plasma BSA clearance rate was computed from the plasma BSA levels of the fish injected with BSA. Using the deconvolution method, the BSA release rate into plasma after the HI treatment was calculated both from the plasma BSA levels after the HI treatment and from the plasma BSA clearance rate. Clearance rates were significantly higher in seawater-acclimatized fishes than in freshwater-acclimatized fishes. On the other hand, release rates into plasma were much lower in seawater-acclimatized fishes than in the freshwater-acclimatized fishes. Thus, we suggest that the high clearance rate and the low release rate in seawater-acclimatized fish work synergistically to result in lower plasma BSA levels of seawater-acclimatized fish than those of freshwater-acclimatized fish after the HI treatment with BSA.
