Ecological requirements of Aldrovanda vesiculosa. Testing of its new potential sites in the Czech Republic

New potential sites for a critically endangered aquatic carnivorous plant Aldrovanda vesiculosa L. (Droseraceae) were selected and experimentally tested in North and South Bohemia (Czech Republic). Either five or ten plants were planted in 1 m x 1 m nylon enclosures in the selected shallow dystrophic waters at the end of may and plant growth characteristics and water chemistry were investigated at 2-5 week intervals over the growing season of 1994. At three sites, the summer growth was very fast and 38-141 turions developed from the initial 5 plants. Water at these sites is mesotrophic with a high concentration of CO2.
