The microstructures of three whisker-reinforced composites with different matrices were investigated using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The matrices were based on an alloy with nominal composition Al-4wt% Cu, without and with additions of 2.5 wt% Mg or 2 wt% Ni. The microstructural features appeared to be similar, except for a more extensive oxide decoration of the interfaces in the Mg-containing composite. © 1990.
