MAGNETISM AND TRANSPORT-PROPERTIES OF EVAPORATED CO/AG MULTILAYERS

We report the magnetic and transport properties of Co/Ag multilayers grown by electron-beam evaporation in an ultrahigh vacuum. The oscillation of the interlayer exchange energy is confirmed for a Co layer thickness of 6 angstrom with a period of 16 angstrom. It is shown that the Co spins are aligned antiferromagnetically for only several monolayers of Co. The magnetoresistance (MR) ratio is 20% at room temperature and 41 % at 77 K for [Co (6 angstrom) -Ag (25 angstrom) ] X 40. The electron mean free path estimated by the free electron model is shortened from the ferromagnetic state to antiferromagnetic one. We confirm that enhanced MR properties could be achieved by realizing a single crystal structure.
