This essay examines the novel attempt of Igor Birman to allow for differences in Soviet and United States trade services by measuring comparative per capita consumption in the two countries. Birman's computation appears to be faulty at a number of points, but the resulting lapses are partially remediable. More generally, the present inquiry may be methodologically and substantively clarifying in respect to a relatively neglected problem. © 1990.
