The transient flow behavior in a single-tube condenser is analyzed with a void fraction propagation equation. Using the method of characteristics, solutions are obtained for the responses of void fraction and outlet flowrate to sudden changes of (1) the wall heat flux and (2) the inlet vapor flow. Results are presented to show the phenomena of transient flow surges in the outlet condensate flow caused by changes in the wall heat flux and the inlet vapor flow. Good agreement is demonstrated between the analysis and available experimental data.
