THERMAL-EXPANSION AND HEAT-CAPACITY OF SOME STAINLESS-STEELS AND FENI ALLOYS

We have measured the linear thermal expansion coefficient, alpha , from 2 to 100 K and the heat capacity, C//p, from 0. 4 to 10 K of stainless steels AISI 304, 316 and 310. All show 'magnetic' contributions to alpha and C//p in addition to the usual lattice and electronic terms. The 304 and 316 steels behave in a similar fashion, showing an anomaly (from magnetic clusters, perhaps) in alpha below 10 K. The 310 steel with high Ni and Cr content has much larger anomalies in both alpha and C//p.
