PHASE-TRANSITIONS AND SUPERCONDUCTIVITY OF SR-SUBSTITUTED LA2-XBAXCUO4(X=0.125)

Neutron diffraction and magnetic susceptibility measurements have been performed to study the correlations between structural phase transitions and superconductivity in Sr-substituted La2-xBaxCuO4 with x = 0.125: La2-xBax-ySryCuO4 with y from 0 to 0.105. The crystal structure at low temperature changes drastically with Sr substitution; that is, the structure transforms from tetragonal P4(2)/ncm (LTT) to orthorhombic Peen, and then to orthorhombic Cmca (LTO) with increasing y. Corresponding to this stabilization of the LTO structure, the bulk superconducting transition temperature T-c is greatly enhanced. Crystal parameters and bond lengths obtained by profile analysis decrease monotonically as a function of y. A large reduction in the bond length of the Cu-apical O bond is noted for the increase in T-c.
