DYNAMICS OF EXCITON POLARITONS IN ALKALI-HALIDES STUDIED BY 3-PHOTON DIFFERENCE-FREQUENCY-GENERATION

摘要
With the use of three-photon difference-frequency generation (TP-DFG) it is possible to measure resonances on the lower polariton branch in alkali halides. The linewidth of the resonances varies drastically from about 0.2 meV to about 50 meV as a function of temperature and polariton wave vector. Applying polariton response theory it is shown that the linewidth is connected with polariton damping due to absorption in the region of the exponential tail of the excitonic absorption edge. Experimental results of KI are reported. Good agreement is obtained between the observed temperature dependent linewidth and the linewidth calculated from one-photon absorption data as described by the Urbach-Martienssen rule. © 1990.
