Tenax GC cartridges were used to collect organic vapors in the ambient air of Houston, Tex. , the Los Angeles, Calif. Basin, and the Raleigh, N. C. area. The vapors were thermally desorbed and analyzed by a capillary gas-liquid chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer. An on-line computer recorded data on magnetic tape and generated normalized mass spectra and mass fragmentograms. The ubiquitous background of hydrocarbons from automobile exhaust were substantially resolved from each other, and 21 halogenated hydrocarbons were detected, including the carcinogens vinyl chloride and trichloroethylene, as well as numerous oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, and silicon compounds.
