摘要
ln this paper the authors explain the biogenic and petrogenic origin of gas in marine sediments in non-technical terms. In such sediments methane arises from bacteriological reduction of organic matter and by geochemical transformation of buried biota. The microbiological mechanisms are described along with the geochemistry of thermogenic gas formation. The process of hydrocarbon migration is briefly outlined together with the means to determine whether a gas sample is biogenic or thermogenic.
