AN EXPERIMENTAL-STUDY OF THE INTERACTION OF HYDROGEN WITH THE MG(0001) SURFACE

The interaction of atomic and molecular hydrogen with the (0001) surface of magnesium has been studied using EELS, TDS, work-function measurements, and core-level spectroscopy. No evidence for molecular or dissociative adsorption of H2 is observed at the substrate temperature investigated (> 110 K). At 110 K, atomic hydrogen is bound to the surface in a strongly chemisorbed state (surface hydride), which is a metastable phase. When the substrate is annealed to 425 K, no desorption occurs but the system converts irreversibly to a chemisorbed phase wherein the hydride characteristics are absent. The results are compared to existing theoretical studies.
