摘要
The toughening effect of a single inclusion is effective if it can attract the crack to enter it and blunt it. A cluster of inclusions has the most toughening effect compared to either a single inclusion or uniformly distributed inclusions in a finite body. The increase in toughness of periodically arranged inclusions is proportional to the volume fraction of inclusions, strain, of misfit, and the square root of inclusion spacing. Increase is independent of crack length, hence dispersion toughening is more effective in crack nucleation than in crack growth.
