GEOGRAPHYS RESEARCH PERFORMANCE-BASED ON ANNALS MANUSCRIPTS, 1987-1993

I use data from the 628 manuscripts submitted to the Annals from 1987-1993 to provide a snapshot of recent geographic research, to obtain some measure of our research productivity as a discipline, and to identify major fields and regions of specialization. I utilize data on authors (total number and by gender), departments, ranks, and manuscript content to assess these themes. Data reveal that 81% of the manuscripts had at least one male author, 38% had at least one female, 109 authors submitted more than one manuscript, and authors came from 157 different universities and 30 countries outside North America. One-quarter of the papers came from California, Wisconsin, Ohio, Illinois, and New York, 80% had a regional focus, and 28% received funding. The major fields were cultural, social, urban, and historical, but the ''mix'' of topics varied somewhat by rank and in particular by gender.
