摘要：

This paper proposes a new method for measuring the degree of vertical integration within a firm or industry. It is based on the magnitude of intra-firm flows of output across industries, relative to the magnitude of market transactions. While data on intra-firm flows are often sketchy or non-existent, we show how they may be imputed indirectly from standard input-output tables and information on market shares of firms across industries. Estimates are reported and analysed for UK manufacturing in 1986 for 79 industries and their leading firms-thereby providing the first known comprehensive picture of vertical integration in the United Kingdom.
