Condensation of formaldehyde with glycinatobis-(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III) ion yields in turn [.alpha.-hydroxymethylserinebis(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III)]2+ and the macrocycle [.alpha.-hydroxymethylserine-1,4,8,11-tetraaza-6,13-dioxacyclotetradecanecobalt(III)]2+, the structures of which have been established by X-ray structural analysis.
