Poly(vinylidene fluoride) can be used as membrane polymer. However, it strongly resists chemical modifications which are sometimes necessary to improve the properties of membranes made from the modified polymers. Good results can be achieved by heterogeneous reactions using the membrane itself. Thus, sulfonation can be carried out with a degree of substitution of 42%. Furthermore, from this type of membrane a sulfamide type can be obtained by the reaction with acetylethanolamine. The conversion was 19% with respect to the sulfonic acid group. The ultrafiltration membranes were characterized by conventional methods and, in addition, by measuring the streaming potential. The influence of the sorption of human albumin on the membrane characteristics was determined.
