摘要
Thermal decomposition of powdered colemanite is used as a means of increasing the extraction rate of boric acid by acid dissolution from the calcine. It is demonstrated that an optimum calcination temperature of around 600-degrees-C exists and that calcines produced at this temperature have a very porous structure which is probably caused by explosive dehydroxylation. Flash calcination at 600-degrees-C can produce calcines which are leached as effectively as calcines produced by conventional soak calcination for many hours, thus indicating potential process energy savings. Flash calcination at higher temperature produces vitrified cenospheres which are highly resistant to acid leaching. The effects described in the paper are probably caused by an interaction between the kinetics of the dehydroxylation reaction, phase transitions and heat/mass transfer processes in the particles.
