THERMOPOWER OF HIGH-TC SUPERCONDUCTORS IN A MAGNETIC-FIELD

We show that the thermopower S(d) of a type-II superconductor in a magnetic field consists of two contributions. The first (and more important) contribution S(d)(1) is proportional to the resistivity rho(s) and both effects are due to the same scattering mechanism. We show this explicitly for bulk and layered superconductors and also for the thermopower due to dissociated vortex-antivortex pairs near a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. The second contribution S(d)(2) is proportional to the Nernst coefficient Q and vanishes in the absence of a transverse electric field.
