A doubly promoted Mn3O4 planar model catalyst for the oxidative coupling of methane is described. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) observations show that oxygen chemisorption on the K-promoted material results in the chemisorption of O-. Copromotion with K and Cl induces the formation of an entirely new oxygen surface species whose appearance depends critically on the simultaneous presence of both promoters. This is very suggestive of the behavior recently reported for highly active and selective Mn3O4/K/Cl methane coupling catalysts. © 1990 American Chemical Society.
