DNNC (1,3,5,5-tetranitrohexahydropyrimidine) and HNDZ (1,3,3,5,7,7-hexanitro-1,5-diazacyclooctane) can be thought of as gem-dinitroalkyl derivatives of RDX and HMX, respectively. TNAZ (1,3,3-trinitroazetidine) is the four membered ring analog. Rapid-scan FTIR spectroscopy was used to detect the gas products from thermolysis at high heating rates (50-170K s** minus **1) and various pressures (0. 1-1000 psi). The decomposition temperatures of DNNC and HNDZ are comparable to RDX and HMX, respectively, but unlike RDX and HMX, the initial product distributions are very similar. The product distribution from TNAZ differs significantly. NO//2 is the vastly dominant initial pyrolysis product from all three compounds. This work is pertinent to rockets.
