High temperature superconductors (Tl1-xBix)Sr2Ca2Cu3O9 have been prepared for x = 0.1 to 0.5 by solid state reactions in sealed gold tubes with Tc's in the range 115 to 120 K. They all have tetragonal unit cells (a ≈ 3.8 and c ≈ 15 Å) and are isostructural to TlBa2Ca2Cu3O9 and (Tl0.5Pb0.5)Sr2Ca2Cu3O9. Electron diffraction patterns of these compounds did not reveal any superstructure, which is common among Bi2Sr2Can-1CunO2n+4 superconductors. Variation of c lattice parameter with x and comparison of unit cell parameters of (Tl0.5Pb0.5)Sr2Ca2Cu3O9 with (Tl0.5Bi0.5)Sr2Ca2Cu3O9 suggests that formal oxidation state of Bi in the title compounds is close to or slightly above 3+. © 1990.
