VISUAL PROCESSING OF SIMPLE 2-DIMENSIONAL SINE-WAVE LUMINANCE GRATINGS

Threshold contrast sensitivity measurement results were given for both 1- and 2-dimensional sinusoidal luminance gratings at spatial frequencies between 0.2-20 c/deg [cycles/degree] of vision and for mean display luminances from 0.034-34 mL [millilambert]. The results for the 2-dimensional gratings were in good agreement for all conditions with the predictions based on the 1-dimensional results and on linear analysis. A quantitative comparison of the results for 1- and 2-dimensional gratings provided psychophysical evidence which is consistent with the existence of orientation-specific channels in the human visual system.
