Silver electrodes which exhibit intense surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for 2,2 prime -bipyridine reveal black carbon-rich laser microzones in the form of a 'halo'. The adsorbate-derived carbon zones are more clearly visible in this system than in the closely related system, Ag/pyridine. Adsorbate carbonization processes have been studied by using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). The AES results show that heavily carbonized zones of the halo are rich in nitrogen (presumably 2,2 prime -bipyridine).
