摘要
Contrary to earlier reports, we show the strain energy of cyclotetradecane is both small and similar to that of other moderately sized cycloalkanes. Our finding is derived by use of semiempirical rules, MM3 molecular mechanical calculations, chemical intuition, and new measurements of heats of sublimation (mean temperature = 39-degrees-C, 23.4 kcal mol-1; corrected to STP, 23.5 kcal mol-1) and vaporization (mean temperature = 70-degrees-C, 14.9; corrected to STP, 15.6 kcal mol-1).
