The crystal of the 1:1 complex of ethyl laurate with heptakis(2,3,6-tri-O-methyl)cyclomaltoheptaose (TM-beta CD, permethylated beta-cyclodextrin) is orthorombic, P2(1)2(1)2(1), with a = 14.796(2), b = 22.444(6), c = 27.720(8) Angstrom; V = 9205(4) Angstrom(3); and Z = 4. The macrocycles have a distorted conformation due to the absence of intramolecular hydrogen bonds and are stacked in a head-to-tail mode to form channels parallel to the b axis of the crystal. In the interior of the channel, the guest molecules are accommodated in extended conformation. Two water molecules have been located near the secondary rim of each TM-beta PCD molecule, forming hydrogen bonds with the oxygen atoms of the guest.
