摘要:
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were determined in extracts of zebra mussels sampled from sites in Hamilton Harbour. The mussels were extracted using a tissue homogenizer method and the resulting solvent extracts were subjected to an alumina column and a Sephadex LH20 column clean-up procedure. Total PAH concentrations in Zebra mussel extracts ranged from 0.35 mug/g to 10.0 mug/g of mussel homogenate. The extracts were also found to exhibit significant mutagenic responses in the Ames Salmonella/microsome assay. The results indicate that zebra mussels might be used as biological indicators of PAH contamination in freshwater environments such as Hamilton Harbour.
