STUDY OF FLOATING ALCOHOL MONOLAYERS IN CONTACT WITH A RESERVOIR DROP - PHASE-DIAGRAM AND APPLICATION TO LANGMUIR-BLODGETT DEPOSITION WITHOUT A MOVABLE BARRIER

摘要
The crystallization of 1-alcohol monolayers in contact with a reservoir drop of alcohol mixed with tetradecane was studied by ellipsometry and the measurement of surface tension. The monolayer and the reservoir drop both float on the water surface. A phase transition occurs when changing the temperature. When the alkane-to-alcohol ratio increases in the drop, the lateral pressure of the alcohol monolayer decreases and the transition temperature decreases. This permits us to control the monolayer lateral pressure without a movable barrier. We applied this to Langmuir-Blodgett deposition of alcohol and acid on solid substrates.
