TOPOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF METAL METALLOID GLASSES - CRYSTAL, LIQUID, GLASS VERSUS PENROSE LATTICE

A monte Carlo study of the liquid and amorphous Ni66B34, Ni80B20 and Fe80B20 alloys is presented for radial distribution functions (rdf), Voronoi tessellation and partial bond-orientational order parameters Ql and Wl in comparison with crystal and Penrose lattices. The presence of direct B-B contact in glassy Ni66B34 and a similar tendency in other systems, including the predecessor in the liquid state, is reproduced by the present model and may correspond to "packing frustration". The five-fold local ordering is pronounced in the one-component glass and metal-metal correlations in binary glasses. © 1990.
