Alternating- and direct-current experiments have been carried out on polycrystalline CaO and MgO. As these solids are very poor conductors the study was made at high temperatures (up to 1000 degrees C) and as a function of compactness. Alternating-current conductivity shows the appearance of a polarization component. A simple electronic model cannot fully explain the results, but one based on a typical double-well potential is more satisfactory. It is assumed that ionic species are responsible for a large part of the conductivity. The number of carriers and the height of the potential barrier are evaluated.
